Tuesday, Aug. 10 was the filing deadline for non-partisan candidates running for office in the Nov. 2 election
Races in which parties choose candidates and the Russellville City Council race required filing before the May primary.
Affected were councils in all four cities in Logan County, some of the school board seats, mayors of Adairville and Auburn, and conservation district boards.
The mayors of Lewisburg and Russellville are in the middle of four-year terms and not involved in the 2004 election.
After the filing deadline, three of the four city council races are contested. Three people are running for mayor in both Auburn and Adairville. And the Russellville school board race is contested.
Lewisburg, however, had only four people file for the six seats, so two council members will either have to be elected as write-in candidates or appointed next year.
In Adairville, there is a three way race for mayor. The incumbent is William Steen, who will face current Councilwoman Donna Blake and businessman James Wilkerson in the election.
In Auburn's race for mayor, there is also a three-way race. Incumbent Dewey Roche will run against Steve Montgomery and Maxie Rittenberry, both of whom are known for their work with emergency services.
In Adairville's race for city council, incumbents Bernice Dickerson, Danny Finch, Bill Hendricks, Tony Nichols, and Judy Tanner are seeking reelection, while Tracy Gunderson and Marla Sircy are challenging for those positions. There are six available spots on city council and seven candidates.
In Auburn's city council race, a total of nine people are running with with four of them being incumbents. Martha Elliott, Ron McGee, John McMurry, and Bobby Price are all the incumbent candidates. Pat Bailey, Jim Kutzman, Cheryl Reding, Timothy Taylor, and Wayne Thomas are the challenging candidates.
Auburn council members Tim Hall and Bonnie Anderson will not be running.
In Lewisburg, there are four incumbents running for reelection, those being Jeffrey Laster, Melanie Palmgren, Diane Rainwater, and Donnie Smith. As there are six available positions on city council, the remaining members will have to be elected by write-in.
In the race for the Russellville Independent School Board, there are three candidates running for two positions. Incumbents Davonna Page and Phillip West will be challenged by Sue Lane Posey Kendrick.
For Russellville's race for city council, the 12 remaining candidates- who survived among 21 people in the primary- will run to fill six positions. Pat Bell, Russell Jones, and Marie Sweatt are the only remaining incumbents running. Their challengers are Bill Decker, Mike McCormick, Lanny McPherson, Starling Murphy, Charles Phillips, Ken Smith, Mark Stratton, Jack Whipple, and Gene Zick.
Candidates for the North Logan Conservation District are R.W. Brown, Warren Stuart and Harold Woodall. From the South Logan Conservation District are Jeff Campbell, William S. Johnson and Eddy Russell.
