The campaign "Buckle Up, Kentucky: It's the Law and It's Enforced" began May 24 and will continue through June 6, with special concentration for the holiday weekend of the 28th-31st.
KSP State Troopers and officers from the Sheriff's Department will be on intestates and secondary roads looking for speeders, intoxicated drivers and seat belt/child restraint violations.
Traffic checkpoints will be conducted throughout the eight counties of the KSP Post 3 area, including Logan, Warren and Simpson. These will be set up in both the daytime and at night, and the public should not expect more than a 3-4 minute delay.
So far in 2004, there have been 22 traffic fatalities in the Post 3 area as compared to 20 at this time in 2003. Driving under the influence and excessive speeding are the two major contributing factors for the increase.
Lives are still being lost when drivers and passengers don't buckle up; ejection from vehicles is the primary source of fatal injuries.
KSP checkpoints in Logan could include Hwy. 79 at the Old ITW Plant, the railroad curve and the Todd/Logan County line; Hwy. 103 at the Simpson County line; Hwy. 178 and 1151; Hwy. 431 and Hwy. 1040, 431 and 106 in Lewisburg and 431 and Peach Orchard Road; and Hwy. 100 and Smith Street and 100 and Sawmill.
The Logan County Sheriff's Department may set up road blocks over the holiday weekend at the 68-80/Hwy. 73 intersection; the 68 fertilizer stretch; 68 and Sportsman Club Road; the Logan and Todd County line; the Kentucky/Tennessee state line on Hwy. 431; 431 and Epley Station; Hwy. 43 and the east limits of Lewisburg; Hwy. 79 at the railroad crossing; 73 at the Simpson County line; Hwy. 100 at the Simpson County line; Hwy. 103 at the Logan/Simpson line; 103 and the bypass; Hwy. 178 and Sportsman Club Road; Hwy. 1293 and 107; 431 and 106 at the east limits of Lewisburg; the fairgrounds entrance on 68; 431 and 591; 431 and Coopertown Road; 178 from the railroad to Homer Road; and 431 at the former Clinards Trucking Company one mile north of Adairville.
