Logan County's unemployment rate, which soared to double figures a couple of years ago, is back down to below 5 percent.

The Kentucky Labor Force Estimates for November 2003 show only 618 of the 12,535 members of the local civilian labor force as being unemployed. That computes to 4.9 percent.

The figure was 5.2 percent in October and 5.9 percent in November 2002.

Logan County's jobless rate grew by a tenth of a percent from November to December.

In November 2001 Logan's jobless rate was 9.1 percent, the 12th highest rate among Kentucky's 120 counties.

In October of that year, Logan's rate was above 12 percent, which was third in the state. That was in sharp contrast to December 2000, when the rate was only 3.7 percent.

Getting back down to that 2000 level again has been a gradual but steady process.

Logan ranked fifth among the 10 Barren River Area Development District counties in November. Allen was at 7.6 percent and Edmonson 7.3 percent while Metcalfe was at only 2.2 percent, the state's best. Simpson was at 4.7 percent and Warren 4.4 percent.

The Pennyrile Area Development District's Todd County, which had one of the state's highest rates not too long ago, has made a remarkable recovery and ranks fourth in the state at 2.8 percent.

Like Metcalfe, Todd has a small population. Only 144 of Todd's 5,140 civilian laborers were out of work last month, and 107 of Metcalfe's 4,932 workers were jobless.

Muhlenberg County is also showing improvement. With an almost identical number of potential workers as Logan, Muhlenberg's rate was 6.2 percent in November, down form 7.6 percent a month earlier and 7.0 percent in November 2002.

The overall figure for BRADD last month was 4.6 percent while the state was at 5.1 percent.
