Last Friday's News Democrat & Leader contained an excellent example of the manipulation and deceit that the Democratic leadership and their new standard bearer-- Ben Chandler--are capable of orchestrating.
Chandler's ad inferred an endorsement by the Logan County Farm Bureau and a lack of interest from Ernie Fletcher. I served as president of the Logan Farm Bureau for four years, and I am outraged by the intent of the advertisement.
Congressman Fletcher has been a tremendous ally of agriculture in Washington. He has received the Friend of Farm Bureau award for his voting record every term in Congress. He has worked tirelessly for a tobacco buy-out plan to help producers who were devastated by the Clinton/Gore administration.
Congressman Fletcher has been a staunch supporter of ethanol and bio-diesel, and was instrumental in providing funding for the Hopkinsville facility that will soon be turning Logan County corn into fuel.
Ernie Fletcher had time to visit with Logan countians during the Tobacco Festival while Mr. Chandler snubbed the area for another engagement in Louisville. Congressman Fletcher has answered the questions asked by the questionnaire in detail through numerous formats.
Congressman Fletcher appeared with Mr. Chandler before the Kentucky Farm Bureau board of directors and answered a series of questions. These answers were included in the October 2003 edition of the Farm Bureau newsletter "All Around Kentucky" that goes to all Farm Bureau households.
The "Kentucky Candidate Information Survey" has a series of questions answered by both candidates. Congressman Fletcher has made available a booklet entitled "Ernie Fletcher's Prescription for Kentucky" and it provides detailed answers to the questions indentified in the ad, as well as other solutions for Kentucky's ailments.
Though I am no longer affiliated with the Logan County Farm Bureau, I know there are many leaders within the organization that understand Ernie Fletcher's concern, dedication, character, and leadership.
Hopefully, these individuals will demand an apology from the Chandler camp for trying to mislead the citizens of Logan County.
