Both coaches agree that the Cougars dominated the first half, but couldn't score. "We only had one first down the first half," concedes RMS Coach Roger Daniel.
LCMS put what Coach Tom Lee calls "a nice drive" together right before halftime, but it ended when quarterback Cody Lee's pass was tipped, and Alonzo Woods intercepted in the end zone.
The only score came when Panther halfback Dustin Sydnor seemed stopped behind the line of scrimmage, but stepped back and found a hole in the line to reverse his field.
His 53-yard run to the end zone accounted for about two-thirds of the Panthers' total offense for the game.
On the next possession, Logan fumbled the ball back to Russellville at the Cougars' 30.
"All the momentum was with RMS, but I was proud of our guys for regrouping and holding them out of the end zone after the fumble," Coach Lee says. "The boys had been through a lot of adversity this week and could have decided to give up and go through the emotions, but they reached down and found something special inside."
Daniel praised his team's defense. "The Panther defense stepped up when it had to keep the Cougars out of the end zone," he said of the 3-2 Panthers.
Daniel was impressed with the Cougars' Clint Hayes, who ran for 46 yards. Adrian Ferguson added 24 yards.
Lee completed 5 of 13 passes for 24 yards with the interception. He was sacked six times.
Ryan Meguiar made two of the catches for 10 yards and Sammy Sells three of 14 yards.
The Panthers go to Hopkinsville today. The Cougars will entertain Todd Central.
