Logan County is a very sports oriented county and that is as American as Mom's apple pie and I would do nothing to change that. Baseball, softball, football, basketball, track, golf, swimming and now girls volleyball either have been or are becoming a big part of the Logan County High School athletic program under the leadership of athletic director, Hugh McReynolds.

These program are led by some great coaches, people who know their sport and how to get kids interested and teach them the fundamentals of playing the game and about sportsman like behavior. They are good programs with a lot of support from the community.

The sport that seems to get pushed to the back burner is the Logan County cross country team, and as a parent of a cross country runner, I want to invite Logan Countians and their children to help bring us into the spotlight.

I have been involved with the cross country team as a parent for three years now. My son started as a cross country runner in middle school and has now moved up to the high school level. With every meet I have watched this team grow and mature.

We have great parent support and a close neighbor does us the favor of mowing his fields regularly so that the kids can practice there.

This sport, like all the others, requires dedication and a lot of practice. Runners from our team of 12, both boys and girls from the middle school to the high school level, placed in every meet we went to last year. That is no small accomplishment in a field of 200 or more runners from county, city and private schools all over Kentucky.

Check out our accomplishments at www.logan.k12.ky.us and click on the school web sites link and then on to Logan County High School and the sports link.

We have run through a few coaches in the history of the team. This year we welcome a new coach, Nicole Robinson. Coach Robinson teaches at Adairville and is a runner herself. She has a lot of energy and will be a great asset to our team. Her love for the sport is obvious. Returning to join Coach Robinson, as an assistant coach this year, is last year's coach, Frank Smith.

Mr. Smith is also a parent of a cross country runner and he and his family have dedicated countless hours to helping us keep a team.

I would like to let all of Logan County know that there is still time for their children to participate. Those in grades 6-12 in a Logan County School, we would like to have you join us. For more details on joining the Logan County High School cross country team, you may contact Coach Nicole Robinson at 1-270-535-2439.
