There is one message Mayor Ken Whitson of Lewisburg would like to get out to the people of Logan County and surrounding areas: Lewisburg is a great place to live.
Whitson wants to see development for the town he has called home all of his life, but not necessarily just economic development. He wants to see residential growth, new homes being built and people moving into the North Logan town and adopting it as their home.
"Economic development is great for Logan County as a whole," Whitson said. '"You can work in Russellville and live in Lewisburg."
Voters chose Whitson to serve as the mayor of Lewisburg the last election. He moved back to Lewisburg in 1986 after serving 20 years in the United States Navy.
When he returned home he bought "the old Pitt house" and has been an active member of the community since.
He first became interested in the city council and the government of the town after attending a city council meeting. He started attending regularly when some issues regarding the town began to concern him.
He decided he didn't have the right to complain about anything if he wasn't willing to get involved. He put his name on the ballot of city council in the early 90's and has actively been involved in the town since his election.
He decided to run for mayor this past election after being approached by some citizens encouraging him to run, He is a firm believer in people having a choice.
Whitson wants people to realize Lewisburg has a lot to offer; to be found there are a bank, grocery store, flower shop, eateries, auto store, car lot, drug store, video store, churches, school, laundromat, dentist, doctor, beauty shops, library, museum, and more.
He doesn't believe there is any need to go anywhere else.
Growth is very feasible for Lewisburg. The sewer system is state of the art and has been built to withstand a 300 percent increase. Since the adoption of the Logan-Todd Regional Water, water rates are also very much in line with what residents in other towns in the county are having to pay now.
Whitson also noted property value in Lewisburg is very competitive. One can purchase a home there at a much more reasonable price than in some other places in the county.
Lewisburg is also facing many of the similar problems confronting other small towns across the state, which involve getting left behind by the lure of the larger towns.
But he plans to work diligently in seeing that Lewisburg doesn't get left behind. He wants to see it promoted across the county and state, and he wants everyone to know what he has always known, there is no place like home and Lewisburg is a great place to call home.
