When Logan County is in need, the American Red Cross has been there. From handing out coffee and collecting blood to offering emergency support both financially and emotionally, the Red Cross answers immediately.

Not only do they play an intricate part in the community, such as supporting community and school events, they also provide much needed services such as CPR & first aid training and health and safety classes. The list of services goes on and on.

It is now, though, that the local chapter of the Red Cross located on Main Street is in need of help. They need a new place to stay, a cheap place to stay, a safe place to stay.

According to Carol Head, director of the local chapter, the building that currently houses the Red Cross is dangerous and a health and fire hazard.

"The wiring in this building is old and the roof has fallen in more than once. There is mold growing from the moisture which has accumulated over the years," said Head, who says she has had a couple of respiratory infections as a possible result.

Head says she has contacted the landlords (First Baptist Church) but has not received word that they intend to fix the building.

Head said she wrote the church's properties committee a letter stating the building's problems. A member of the committee came to view the building and, according to Head, said that they might as well just tear it down.

Head says the Logan County Chapter is extremely important to her and she is on a mission to find a safe place to move.

Unfortunately, the Red Cross is a non-profit organization and funds for things like rent are scarce. "We can afford to pay rent, but it has to be in our budget."

They are currently paying First Baptist $200 a month. They previously paid $350 a month but were having difficulties with money, so it was lowered in the last year or so.

According to Head, regional and state chapters said 'move' immediately before someone gets hurt or equipment gets damaged.
