The former Logan County High School and University of Kentucky pitching star signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization Tuesday.
He has been assigned to the Reds' AAA affiliate in Louisville. He was to join the Bats for their road trip to Pawtucket this weekend following the All-Star break.
This is Thompson's 11th year as a professional baseball player and his second stint with the Reds. He was with Cincy's AAA club, which was then in Indianapolis, in 1999.
He has been with Colorado most of his career, including part of this year, and with the St. Louis Cardinals for parts of two seasons.
Thompson had been pitching in an independent league this summer in New York. He had a 3-3 record with the Long Island Ducks.
