Russellville's loss against Greenwood was shocking, to say the least. No one, or at least no one cheering for Russellville, imagined that it was possible to lose in such a short period of time to Greenwood.
It all started in the first inning, when the Lady Panthers stepped on to the field, just happy to be at regionals. Ashley Kees stepped up to plate pleased and confident, but returned to the dugout stunned.
Mary Lynn Kisselbaugh stepped up to the plate ready and willing to knock the ball down a Lady Gator's throat, but was quickly out at first.
Maggie Wright stepped up to the plate, but her attempts were as futile as her teammates' when it came to getting a hit off a pitcher that should have gone pro by now.
Russellville's defense was extremely easy for Greenwood to shut down, as the 10-0 score at the end of the first ending will attest to.
Greenwood shows as much expertise at bat as they do on defense. After two Lady Gators singled, the third batter knocked Stephanie Southerland's pitch out of the park. Needless to say, after eight runs, Thompson switched Andrea Holland for Southerland, but that didn't matter to Greenwood one way or the other, since they considered the game just batting practice anyway.
Six runs later, in the third inning, Greenwood closed the game with a confident and merciful touch by replacing their entire defense with their JV team. After this switch, Sarah Thompson was walked and was the first person to get on base for Russellville the entire game.
She was out at the second. The game ended 16-0, and so did the season for the Russellville Lady Panthers. Even though the loss to Greenwood was extremely disappointing to the team, the Lady Panthers can at least say this season was better than past seasons.
They did well in district, they made it to regionals, and they have continued to improve since the first day of practice. So as the bats, balls and gloves are put up for Russellville, we say our final farewells.
Good job, ladies!
