On a positive note, Logan County has been moved from Zone 2 to Zone 3. Yes, I know, that means a shorter season, but this will accomplish a couple of things.
First and foremost, it will give the deer a little more recovery time from the Blue Tongue that raked our area year before last.
Everywhere I have gone, people have made the comment that there just aren't as many deer in the Land of Logan as in years past.
It will also reduce hunter/trapper conflicts as well. There have been other changes in the regulations as well.
Following is a press release I received Wednesday morning from Jeff Finn:
2002-03 deer season laws proposed
The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission has finalized its regulation recommendations for the 2002-2003 deer season. The commission recommends all hunting, fishing and boating regulations for approval by the General Assembly and approves all expenditures by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR).
The proposed dates of the 2002-2003 deer seasons are:
Archery (statewide): Sept. 21. - Jan. 20
Crossbow (statewide): Dec. 2 - 11.
Early Muzzleloader (statewide): Oct. 26 - 27.
Late Muzzleloader (statewide): Dec. 14 - 20.
Modern Firearms: (zones 1-2) Nov. 9 - 24.
Modern Firearms: (zones 3-4) Nov. 9-18.
Youth-only Gun Hunt Weekend (statewide): Oct. 19-20.
The commission recommended that hunters may take either sex deer for the duration of the 2002-03 modern gun season in Zone 1-3 counties. Last year, the final six days of the modern gun season in Zones 1-2 were open to antlerless deer hunting only. In Zone 4 counties, hunters for the first time will be able to take either sex deer during the December muzzleloader season.
The statewide antlered deer limit on private land remains at one per hunter per season.
Bracken, Harrison, Robertson and Taylor Counties will move from Zone 2 to Zone 1 for the 2002-2003 deer season. Allen, Hancock, Logan, Muhlenberg, Simpson, Todd and Warren Counties will move from Zone 2 to Zone 3.
Also new this season, since the system to check-in a harvested deer is now accomplished by a toll-free phone call, deer hunters will be required to telecheck their deer by midnight of the day the deer is recovered from the field.
On the Pioneer Weapons WMA in Bath and Menifee counties, the commission recommended that only primitive archery and firearm equipment be permitted on the area. Compound bows and in-line muzzle-loaders will no longer be considered legal hunting equipment on the Pioneer Weapons WMA this season.
The next Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting will be held at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 7. at the Game Farm off U.S. 60 in Frankfort. Persons interested in addressing the Commission must notify the KDFWR Commissioner's office in writing at least 30 days in advance to be considered for placement on the meeting agenda.
In fishing news, the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will hold four tournaments at LBL, beginning this weekend (March 23) at Kentucky Dam Village Resort Park.
The second tourney will be April 13 at Lake Barkley State Resort Park. The third will be held out of Moors Marina on Kentucky Lake on June 15, followed on July 13 by the fourth tourney hosted by Paris Landing.
The LBL super tournament will be held Sept. 14-15 at Kentucky Dam. Prizes are $5,000 in the boating division and $2,500 in the co-angler divisions.
Following the regular season, the top 30 anglers in each division will go to the regional competition on Wheeler Lake near Rogersville, Ala. (Oct. 29-Nov. 2).
Boaters will compete for a new Chevy truck and a Ranger boat while co-anglers fish for a new Ranger boat . Those who don't advance to the regionals but fished in all Five regular season tourneys may fish the Chevy Trucks Wild Card Regional Nov. 5-9 for a shot at the 2003 Wal-Mart BFL All American Championship.
There will be $100,000 cash going to the winning boater and 50,000 cash going to the winning co-angler.
