This Saturday, March 23, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the solid waste coordinator are sponsoring a county-wide cleanup.

We are asking organizations and private citizens to take four hours out of their busy schedule to help clean up our beautiful county.

All groups and individuals are asked to report to the Chamber at 726-2206 or to the solid waste coordinator at 726-7220 about the areas they clean up. You can leave bags of litter on the side of the roads you clean up, as long as you report where you left them.

We are coordinating this cleanup with the state-wide Commonwealth Cleanup, which is held during the third week of March each year. This is an initiative that gets volunteer groups out to clean up our roadways and illegal dumps.

This program, in its third year, came about as a result of resolution by the Kentucky General Assembly, when they failed to pass effective legislation to clean up Kentucky in 1998.

Logan County is providing garbage bags and some safety vests. They can be picked up on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 at the Logan County Chamber office. If any groups from the outlying cities want bags and can't come to Russellville, you can call my office this week and leave your name and number. I will try to get the bags to you before Saturday.

We can make a difference by getting out this week. If you are not part of an organized cleanup, you can tidy up around your neighborhood. Again, we ask all groups and individuals to report to the above numbers regarding the areas they clean and how many bags of trash they pick up, so we can track our efforts.

You can also help by calling Senator Joey Pendleton at 1-800-372-7181 and expressing your support for HB 174, which would provide money for the counties to establish year-round cleanup programs.

Even if you cannot help this Saturday, call our senator and tell him that you want a cleaner state and that the counties need the resources to clean up our streets and illegal dumps.
