Feb. 25 was a day to honor farmers for providing us with the most affordable food in the world. The average American earns enough income to pay for their annual food supply in just seven weeks. By comparison, the average American works until mid-April to pay for their annual taxes.

Logan County Farm Bureau Federation with assistance from members of the Logan County FAA Chapter conducted a “Food Check-out Day” Feb. 25th at the Lewisburg IGA and Russellville Dollar General Market. A Market Basket Survey was held Feb. 24th at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. At each location participants guessed the value of a typical basket of groceries. A $50 gift certificate for groceries was given to the winner at all three locations. A $25 gift certificate was given to the second place winners at the grocery store locations. Piggly Wiggly of Russellville furnished the market basket of groceries at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting location.

Farm Bureau members, Bobby Dawson, Jerry Hughes and Richard Moore assisted by Logan County FAA president elect Emily Chambers and vice president elect Barrett Rogers worked at the Russellville Dollar General Market location. Jearlene Smith won first place and Cheryl Speck won second place.

Logan County Farm Bureau President, Frances Brown; board member, Bradley Brown; Carrell Hughes, Women’s Chairman and Hanna Brown, daughter of Jonathan and Becky Brown assisted by Logan County FAA members Jared Simmons, past Junior Treasurer and Keith Smith, Sentinel, worked at the Lewisburg IGA location. Amanda Schultz won first place and Beth Campbell won second place.

Dwight and Tammy Grise worked at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting at which Holly Kash was the winner.

These food checkout events were conducted to give recognition to the American Farmers for providing us with affordable food. As a result we have more money to spend on other things, which boosts our whole economy and quality of life.
