As black flies swarmed parts of Logan County earlier in the year, people tried many ways to fight the little pests – some comparing the infestation to a Biblical plaque. Citizens could be seen adorning dryer sheets and mosquito netting and were even noticed flailing about with hands waving rigorously through the air swatting at them.

There was much speculation on why the tiny little bug was more prevalent than in the years past. According to many, the fly has always been around Logan County just not in the quantity that appeared this year.

Residents and officials alike were concerned about the flies so much they rallied Representative Martha Jane King who secured some spraying to kill the flies.

Many wonder if the flies will be back as bad in 2011 and preparations are currently being made now to prevent it.

Judge Executive Logan Chick brought up the issue at Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting. He said he received a letter from Kevin Ferguson of the agricultural department. He said the state has three barrels of the chemical spray that would kill the larva of the fly and they were going to treat Whippoorwill Creek and Red River but wanted the county to purchase 11 more barrels. Each barrels costs $924.

Magistrate Jo Orange said she thought this year was just a strange year.

No action was taken by the court.
