The department has 16 cruisers on the road and three spares.“It’s like a slow bleed,” said Sheriff’s Captain Stephen Stratton. “We try each year to swap out at least two cruisers in the fleet which helps slow the bleed down, but doesn’t stop it completely.”

No appetite for fixing school lunch

You can lead a kid to vegetables, but you can’t make her eat. Especially if the food doesn’t taste good. That’s what the government found out in the wake of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.I was active in advocating for school lunch reform at the time. The bill became law shortly after I published a book on U.S. food policy. It seemed like such a perfect solution: Fix school lunch and you improve the diets of millions of kids instantly. You also...

Wright wrong about right-to-work

The closer Kentucky moves toward a right-to-work policy, the more agitated opponents become. But I’m hopeful that facts about what a right-to-work policy is, is not and how it’s working in the 24 states that already have it will trump false claims and fear mongering by those who seem woefully confused about the issue.Steven Wright of Hodgenville based on his recent ideological missive published by the Elizabethtown News-Enterprise definitely is among those mis...

Snack better after school

As most parents know, children tend to be ready to eat as soon as the school bell rings. But with dinner still a few hours away, it’s too easy to let kids reach for convenient snacks that are packed with calories, excess sugar and too much fat. Local writer tells tall tales

Russellville readers may find some things familiar in Douglas W. Daech’s newest novel, Seedy Hills, An Odd Little Town. Although he is quick to point out in a tongue in cheek disclaimer that the novel is a work of fiction and any similarities are coincidental, some people may think they recognize themselves. The setting of the book, like many small towns has a city center with a fountain and a cannon. Storefronts surround the tranquil square. And not unlike Russellville, the newspaper o...

Protecting our infants act

Kentucky has a growing prescription drug abuse and heroin abuse problem, and the scope of the problem is shocking.
