The Logan County Good Samaritan, in conjunction with Modern Woodman of America, are hosting a Spring Concert Fundraiser Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at Crossroads Church.
Logan County Good Samaritan is a non-profit, Christian run, benevolent organization, who provides food and limited financial assistance to those in crisis situations living in Logan County. They also distribute the USDA TEFAP (Commodities) and CSFP (Senior Box) Programs monthly.
“This is going to help because a great deal,” said Good Samaritan Executive Director Denise McDonald. “Last year, we started running out of funds in June or July, this year it is already happening. The last couple of years Community Action of Southern Kentucky had more money but this year they were out before February which makes it harder on us to help those in need. The money from this event will be real helpful. We are trying to give out more during this time of year.”
McDonald said she is happy to be working with Modern Woodman of America who have pledged to match the first $2,500 raised. She said she believes Good Samaritan worked together with Modern Woodman of America years ago and is so thankful to be partnering with them once again. “They have been very helpful to us and we are very fortunate to have them,” said McDonald.
The singing will feature Russ Funk who will be opening for The Crossmen Quartet. The Crossmen Quartet began singing together in the Spring of 1993 and the quartet has been going strong ever since. This traditional male quartet has seen some changes through the years, but Boyce and Scott Flener remain as original members and founders of the group.
Since 2001, the Crossmen Quartet members are Scott Flener - tenor, Boyce Flener - lead, Darren Lawrence - baritone, and Mark Mudd - bass. Scott and Boyce are brothers, and Darren and Mark are married to Flener cousins. So this group offers something few can - they are a male quartet and family group in one! The rich, family harmony of the group continues to establish the sound that delights gospel audiences everywhere. Each of these men feels they have a true calling from God to be in this ministry. That is most evident as they perform the music they love and bless hearts with the message they proclaim in song.
In the beginning, the Crossmen made a couple of independent recordings featuring mostly favorite songs from full-time, well-known quartets. One night, a twist of fate brought a gentleman with connections to the Grand Ole Opry to a local church on an evening the Crossmen were appearing there. Within a few months, this group was standing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, singing gospel music to a sold-out crowd of thousands.
Even though the quartet had already begun to travel quite extensively, this exposure and repeated trips to the Opry attracted the attention of nationally known promoters and a record company who was interested in giving them a chance. From there, word spread in the Southern Gospel industry about a new male quartet.
While recording with Sonlite Records, the group produced two new projects on the label, with every nationally-released single making the charts in the Singing News Magazine (known as “the printed voice of gospel music”) Top Eighty. Their first nationwide release, “Sweet Heaven Awaits”, went to #47 on the charts. This song was co-written by lead singer, Boyce Flener, and Gayle Brooks, mother of original Crossmen bass singer, Jason Brooks. “Rise Above it All”, a powerful song featuring Scott Flener - tenor, written by Chris White, charted at #39 in the nation. Their recording on the Family Music Group label continued the streak of charting songs. “You Are the One”, written by Gerald Crabb, topped the charts at #37. Now with Zion Music Group in Nashville, Tennessee, the group recently held the #43 position with “He is Leading” written by Rodney Griffin.
Since 1993, the Crossmen Quartet has performed in well over 1,000 concerts and taken its music to nearly 30 states as well as the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands. The group has made numerous appearances on national television and has been nominated for and won many local, state, and national awards, both as a group and as individuals. The group has been featured in major industry publications, including three feature articles in the Singing News Magazine, and a cover picture/story in the U.S. Gospel News.
As the Crossmen Quartet look to the future, group members and their families pray for God’s guidance as they continue their ministry in song and to be open to what He has in store.
Minimum requested donation is $5 per person. Children 10 and under are free of charge. All proceeds raised will help those in need of utility/heating assistance. All donations greater than the requested amount are tax-deductible.
