Pete Reckard, District Manager for Scott Waste Services, was on hand at Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting to answer questions magistrates had concerning the start up of the new countywide recycling program. The program will affect the customers in the unincorporated areas of the county and the city’s of Adairville, Auburn, Lewisburg and Russellville.
The curbside, co-mingling recycling program is kicking off this month and both the fiscal court and Scott Waste want to make the transition as easy as possible for customers.
“We are looking forward to this program. It’s going to be hectic for a few months, but we will be thankful after that,” said Reckard.
The county, and four cities within it, entered into an agreement a few months ago with Scott Waste to provide recycling to its customers. Co-mingling means the customer does not have to separate the recyclables, but just throw them into the proper cart and wheel it out to the curb once a month. Logan County is one of the first in the state to begin such a program.
The county began looking into curbside recycling two years ago when it began a pilot program that allowed just under 400 customers to receive recycling carts for six months. Because the pilot was so successful, magistrates began the process to rebid its exclusive contract for collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste. The new agreement includes all customers in the unincorporated areas of the county and cities in a unified contract, and offers recycling.
At Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting magistrate Bouldin told Reckard there were still some customers that have not received a recycling cart. Some of those included customers on Hwy. 100 (Franklin Road) and Karla Circle. Reckard assured Bouldin he would make sure those customers were taken care of immediately.
Reckard said he had had a few calls from customers who did not want to recycle, however, he asked them to just give it a try, assuring them it would be easy to do and be beneficial as well.
The county and four cities will be generating some revenue on the recycling when it is sold. The funds will be disbursed on a percentage basis. The city of Russellville has made mention it will give back those funds to the customers by lowering the waste pick up rates.
In June, Scott will pick up recycling carts the week of the 17th through 21st. That means put your recycling cart out that week whichever day you normally put out your trash cart. In July the recycling carts will be picked up from the 15th through 19th. In August it will be the 15th and 16th and then the 19th through 21st, and in September it will be the 16th through 20th. Remember, when you take out your recycling cart the “third pick up,” do not roll out your trash cart. The trash cart will be picked up the other three times per month.

Scott put out a list of what goes in the recycling cart and what does not. That information is as follows:
Cans
* aluminum, tin, steel and bi-metal cans
Paper
* newspaper, cardboard, junk mail and other paper products, paperback and phone books
* magazines
* paper grocery bags
* carton board such as cereal boxes and show boxes (flatten all boxes and remove plastic bags)
Plastics
* all plastic containers and lids
Do NOT include
* food contaminated paper
* hardcover books
* photos
* tissue paper, paper towels, or toilet paper
* plastic bags
* styrofoam
* glass containers, mirrors, ceramics or light bulbs
No Hazardous Materials including:
* automotive liquids, garden chemicals, paint products, cleaners and fluorescent lamps
IMPORTANT
* empty containers only
* rinse all food and beverage containers
* flatten, crush or cut all cardboard boxes
* all recyclables must be placed in the cart
* set out your cart at least two feet away from other objects
Scott asks customers to please not put any trash into the recyclable cart, but instead into the trash cart.
