For the third year now, the Russellville Rotary club has taken part in the Happy Feet = Learning Feet program, which provides a new pair of sneakers to needy students in the Logan County and Russellville school districts.
On Wednesday, 281 children from the eight schools in the two districts were fitted for the new shoes by employees from
Shoe Carnival of Bowling Green.
Another 30 students were absent from school that day an will also receive a free pair of shoes. The students get to pick out the style and color of their new shoes from a predetermined selection.
Last year, 314 students were fitted and received shoes through the program.
“We’re going to have a similar number this year by the time we get finished,” said Jim Riley, project chairman for the Rotary club. “Our two school superintendents, Leon Smith and Marshall Kemp, and the family resource personnel at the various schools have been wonderful to coordinate this project.”
Riley said that the cost of the shoes has went up slightly this year, but Rotary was able to absorb that cost thanks to the generosity of the community, which supports this venture.
“Our people have a special place in their hearts for helping young people,” Riley said. “We have been told by the school personnel that students are better prepared to lean in the classroom if they have properly fitted shoes, rather than ones that are too large or too small – or not appropriate for the bad weather.”
