The Logan County Little League is enjoying a much-improved ballfield this year thanks in large part to the Logan County fiscal court.
The magistrates and judge executive approved a proposal to give the league $35,000 last year in order to do some much-needed upgrades to Caleb Slaton Field in Memorial Park.
And the coaches, players and parents couldn’t be happier with the results.
“To see the place now compared to what it was before is amazing,” said John Myers, who is on the Little League board and also coaches a team.
The main improvements the league made was rebuilding the backstop, dugouts and press box.
They also put in two brand new batting cages just beyond the outfield fences.
“The old practice area was just dangerous,” Myers said. “And there was only one. Now that we’ve got two new ones, both teams don’t have to take turns warming up before their games.”
Myers said that past league president Billy Bingham was instrumental in getting the money from fiscal court.
“He really put in a lot of legwork to get that money for us,” Myers said. “The cooperation between the city and the county and the Little League has been outstanding.”
The city of Russellville with mayor Mark Stratton and city parks manager Kenny Gregory have helped keep the field looking great, Myers added.
The league is trying to get the most bang for its buck out of the money.
So far, it has only spent roughly $15,000-$20,000 of the $35,000.
“We’ve tried to be very frugal with the money we were given,” Myers said.
Carter Douglas Company and Wayne Cates were a big help when doing the renovations.
“They didn’t charge us anything for the labor,” Myers said. “We just had to pay for the materials. They really helped us get the most bang for our buck.”
The field also got a new scoreboard, but it didn’t cost anything as it was paid for by donations from Lewisburg Bank and Coca-Cola.
The Logan County Little League board isn’t through with its plans for the field, though.
The board has applied for a Carpenter Grant in the hopes of doing further upgrades.
“We’d like to see this place get a new restroom and concessions facility one day,” Myers said.
