The 13th district volleyball championship tournament was held on Thursday at Todd County Central High School. The Logan County Lady Cougars took home the championship win, which is the tenth championship in a row for the Lady Cougars. The Russellville Lady Panthers lost in the championship game to the Lady Cougars but still earned second place.

The Lady Cougars played first as they faced the hosting team, the Todd County Central Lady Rebels. The Lady Cougars held a strong lead throughout all three games and won 3-0 (25-7, 25-7, 25-12).

Next was a face-off against the Russellville Lady Panthers and the Franklin-Simpson Lady Wildcats. The Lady panthers played smart and handled the ball well, which resulted in a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-13, 25-10).

This would put the county rivals, the Lady Cougars and the Lady Panthers, facing each other in the championship game. The Lady Cougars were able to control a majority of the match and maintained steady lead to win the championship title 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-10).

In the championship game, the Lady Cougars had 33 kills overall with Chanler Steenbergen leading with 17. Megan Griggs would make two solo blocks. The team would also finish with 39 digs, Rachyl Miller and Chanler Steenbergen with seven each.

“I think the girls started off playing really well, I’m don’t know what happened. They have improved on their passing and hitting throughout the season and they have been progressing as players,” said Russellville head coach Terricka Quarles. “We’ve had an awesome time this season. Everyone got a long and had fun and worked hard.”

“I think we played a little sloppy tonight but I’m proud of the girls. This is our tenth win in a row and our 72nd district win overall,” said Logan County head coach Steve Lyne. “We are going to have some intense practices this week as we prepare for the regional games and push each other. It’s really excited and we’re just fired up and ready to go.”

Both teams advanced to this week’s Fourth Region Tournament in Metcalfe County.
