Adairville principal found dead

On Monday, the Kentucky State Police was called out to Russellville to the home of Adairville principal Paul Sansom and when they arrived they found him dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Jonathan Biven, the public affairs officer for Post 3 in Bowling Green.

Biven said that when Sansom was found, he had a firearm in his hand.

Biven added that an autopsy was requested, per KSP policy in a shooting death, but when a note from Sansom was found as part of the investigation, the autopsy was deemed no longer necessary.

Logan County schools superintendent Marshall Kemp called Sansom’s death “a tragic loss.”

“And it’s not only for the school district and the school students and staff, but also for the community and certainly his family,” Kemp said. “He was a highly effective principal, who had a good school and worked with everyone to build the right relationships to get good results. Adairville school always had good results, everybody there took pride in what they did.”

School was not in session either on Monday or Tuesday because of Election Day, and school resumed at Adairville as normal on Wednesday, but there were several counsellors on hand for those that needed it.

“Wednesday we had considerably more there than Thursday,” Kemp said. “We will try to get through the rest of the week with the help of the counsellors.”

Kemp added that the students have “done remarkably well under the circumstances.”

“The procedure that is recommended is to have a regular routine for students and everybody else,” Kemp said. “And that’s what we always try to do whenever possible.”

Kemp said there are no plans yet on who will be in charge of the school for the rest of the school year.

“I’m sure that I will be around for a little bit and then we’ll look for an interim principal,” Kemp said.
