The Concerned Citizens of Russellville and Logan County got a great help this week as the first shipment of food and other necessities arrived from the Nashville branch of Feed the Children.
Feed the Children is a non-profit Christian group dedicated to providing food and other essentials to needy children and adults.
“It took me a year to get into this program,” said Concerned Citizens director Doris Vick. “It was a lot of work, but it’s paying off.”
Vick said that the first shipment of food from Feed the Children was so large that she shared it with two other local food banks - SheepGate and Muddy River Baptist Church.
“They told me it was okay if we shared the food with other food banks if we got too much to use,” Vick said.
In addition to the food, Concerned Citizens also received several hundred pairs of shoes from Feed the Children.
“This will help for the holidays, because there is some kids in this community that won’t be getting anything for Christmas,” Vick said.
Concerned Citizens will begin giving out the shoes Friday morning.
“We got a few tennis shoes, but we’ve also got boots, sandals, wedges, men’s shoes and other shoes,” Vick said. “There are some nice, expensive shoes in there. These are the kind of shoes that a lot of people wouldn’t be able to purchase.”
Vick said that those wishing to get the free shoes will need to show a proof of income in order to receive them.
“We just want to have some basic guidelines so that we can see the people that are getting them are really in need,” Vick said.
This is just the first of many regular shipments that Concerned Citizens will be getting from Feed the Children, Vick said.
There was no cost to the local nonprofit - they just had to take a truck to Nashville to pick it up.
Concerned Citizens didn’t have to worry about paying for the truck, though, as GT Freight in Auburn graciously volunteered to take care of the shipments.
“He’s been a huge blessing for us,” Vick said. “There’s no way we could have got all this stuff without GT Freight. We don’t have to pay him a dime. If we had more people like him, we could really get somewhere.”
Future shipments may include items such as clothes or household necessities, Vick said.
About Feed the Children
Founded in 1979, Feed The Children is consistently ranked as one of the largest international charities in the U.S., based on private, non-government support. Feed The Children is an international, nonprofit relief organization with headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, that delivers food, medicine, clothing and other necessities to individuals, children and families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty or natural disasters. In FY 2011, Feed The Children distributed more than 104 million pounds of food and other essentials to children and their families in all 50 states and internationally.
350,000 U.S. families in need of assistance and hope received food and essentials through our Americans Feeding Americans Caravan since 2009. Overall our food distributions impact 10,000,000 each year through our partner agencies and distributions. Help keep our trucks on the road delivering food to those in need.
Last year alone, 150,000 backpacks were distributed to homeless students in U.S. public schools, bringing the total served to more than a half million through our ongoing education programs which assist teachers and students. Over 500,000 children in need in the U.S receive school supplies or children’s books each year. Help give a child a better future.
We work closely with partner agencies to deliver supplies all over the country and the world to help get victims of disasters back on their feet. 2011, more than 200 truckloads of disaster relief services were also distributed to thousands of displaced families and communities after disastrous tornadoes struck America’s heartland and extreme flooding engulfed the southeastern United States. We need your help to be ready when disasters strike.
