The Logan County school district lost another administrator to the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) and the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC) for the $41 million Race to the Top-District grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education in late December.
Chandlers principal Elisa Brown will be leaving to serve as one of the program directors under Dr. Janet Hurt, who left the Logan County central office to head up the program last month.
“I believe she’s been a good asset for that school and our district,” Logan County schools superintendent Marshall Kemp said of Brown. “I’m not really happy about losing anybody, but maybe they can help us from their new positions.”
The Chandlers site-based decision making council was scheduled to meet Thursday night to begin the selection process for a new principal for the school and name either an interim or acting principal for the remainder of the current school year.
Brown’s last day at Chandlers will be today.
This is the second opening for a principal in the school district this year. Adairville is also currently going through the process of replacing its principal.
“I’ve done this before,” Kemp said. “In 2004 Auburn and Lewisburg were both seeking principals. Adairville is a little more ahead of the game right now because they have been going through the selection process longer.”
Kemp said that the Adairville site-based council has picked six finalists for that job and will be conducting interviews on April 12 and 13.
There were approximately 20 applicants for that position.
“Those candidates will have the option to apply for the Chandlers job too, of course,” Kemp said.
Hurt, who served as assistant superintendent, has not been replaced at the Logan County schools central office yet.
Kemp said that he hopes to have her replacement named by the beginning of the new school year. In the meantime, the district is down to just two central office administrators - Kemp and Barry Goley, who serves as special education coordinator and director of pupil personnel.
“We’re limping along at the moment,” Kemp said.
Kemp said that he may have to look into hiring some part-time help in his office before the position is filled with a full-time replacement for Hurt.
In other school board news, the local planning committee met this week on Tuesday and voted 14-0 to approve the school board’s recommendation to build a new addition to the Olmstead school.
The addition will be for a new preschool room on the ground floor of the school and will also include a new art room. The addition is necessary because a state law requires all preschool classrooms to be on the ground floor by the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. Olmstead’s current preschool room is on the second floor of that building.
