The Russellville Panthers and the Logan County Cougars played in district games on Tuesday night. The Panthers faced the Todd County Central Rebels and the Cougars faced the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats. The Panthers had a successful night and won 10-3. The Cougars were not as lucky and fell 1-5.
In the Russellville game, it was actually the Rebels that scored the first run of the game in the first inning. The Panthers tried to get a run in, but they ended the first inning down 0-1.
In the second inning, Zach Denney hit a double and then was brought home by Wes Stratton to gain their first run of the night. The teams would be tied up 1-1 going into the third.
The Panthers would gain two more runs in the third inning, Crewsdon Kemp and Barrett Croslin would score for the Panthers, putting their lead at 3-1.
The Panthers would have a big fourth inning. The Panthers would load the bases early in the game and bring in Colby Nichols on a walk. Wes Stratton and Travis Kennedy would come home soon after and Croslin would slide into home, increasing their lead to 7-1.
The Panthers would keep fighting and bring in more runs in the fifth inning. Colby Nichols would get a good hit, bringing in Corey Wright and Zach Denney would score again. Tyler Hall would get another run for the Panthers in the sixth. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Panthers would let the Rebels gain two more runs to the score, but the Panthers would take the win of 10-3.
“A district win is always good. They needed to come out and play tonight and they did,” said head coach Greg Shelton. “They played hard and showed a good effort. They had some big, timely hits and got on base. We need to work on understanding the game better, but there has been progress everyday.”
The Cougars would also play the Wildcats this night. The Wildcats came out ready to play on Tuesday night. The Wildcats would gain a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the game. Then add another run in the second inning, leaving the Cougars behind 0-3.
The game was quiet in the third and fourth innings, neither team would score until the fifth inning. The Wildcats would bring in two more runs, increasing their lead 5-0.
In the sixth inning, the Cougars brought in Hunter Britt to pitch. Britt pitched two hitless innings, allowing no earned runs, walked one and struck out two.
It was the bottom of the seventh, the last chance for the Cougars to comeback, but the Cougars could not make it happen. Joe Holiday hit a double, bringing in the first and only run of the game.
The Russellville Panthers will play next Tuesday at Franklin-Simpson. The Cougars will be competing in the South Warren Invitational this weekend.
