The Logan County Office of Protection and Permanency helped coordinate the annual walk to commemorate national Child Abuse Awareness Month on Wednesday.
The event started with a short ceremony in Carrico Square Park and then adults and children from areas schools.
“It’s a sad thing, but it’s important to bring awareness to this,” said Missy Perry, the family services office supervisor for the Office of Protection and Permanency. “We’re just thankful for everyone that came out today and took part in this ceremony- especially the schools for bringing their children out to be a part of it.”
Walkers then went around the square and proceeded to the old Logan County courthouse where Russellville mayor Mark Stratton read a join proclamation between his office and the Logan County fiscal court officially recognizing Child Abuse Awareness Month here locally.
According to Perry, in the past year there were 327 reports of child abuse and neglect in Logan County alone and 72 unique children were found to be abused or neglected from those reports.
