Three arrested after trying to scam seniors

The Russellville Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Department worked together last week to stop a scam targeting the elderly and arrest the individuals involved.

On Wednesday, April 24, the RPD received several complaints about three suspicious white males in a new red truck that were going to elderly women’s homes and attempted to extort money by claiming they had done maintenance to the residences.

According to a police report, one 85-year-old woman on Maple Lane was a victim of the scheme.

The woman answered her door and the three individuals walked into her home uninvited and claimed to fix a leak. The elderly woman did not know of any leak, but the males then asked for $150 for their “services.”

When the woman told the men she was going to call a family member for help, they quickly left her house.

Also that day, the Logan County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call on North Main Street in Adairville after a similar incident.

And elderly widow told deputy Laura Hadden that three individuals came to her door and told her that the warranty on her roof had expired and they had done some repair work and were owed $500.

While the man told her about the repairs, he walked into her home and throughout the residence. When the victim started asking questions about who they worked for, they left.

With a good description from witnesses and calls coming in, officer Mary L. Moore of the Russellville Police Department and Hadden were able to locate and apprehend the three suspects. Two of the suspects were a 16-year-old male and a 17-year-old male. The third suspect was identified as 20-year-old John T. Williamson of Clarksville, Ind.

The three suspected were related and had been supposedly staying in a hotel in Springfield, Tenn.

Charges filed against them included second degree burglary, first degree criminal trespass, attempted theft by deception and unlawful transaction with a minor.

Local law enforcement is asking anyone that has had a similar experience to pleace call 726-4911 and an officer will be dispatched to assist you.
