Once again this year, Community Action of Southern Kentucky is helping make sure that children in Russellville get enough to eat through the summer months thanks to its feeding program.

Meals are distributed at various locations through the city to children free of charge throughout the summer.

“The program is meant to provide a nutritious meal for children through the summer when they are out of school,” said Crystal Bell of Logan County Community Action.

The meals are prepared in the head start kitchen and then picked up and distributed at the various sites around Russellville.

“We try to get volunteers to operate in areas of town where it might be most needed - like the housing authority,” bell said. “That way, kids don’t have to cross busy streets to get to the sites.”

Many of the children who use the summer feeding program are used to getting free lunch at school for much of the year.

“You have to think, in the summertime when those kids aren’t being fed at school, people that receiving food stamp benefits -those don’t change,” Bell said. “But the children being at home all day, every day makes a big different. by serving these meals, we hope to help. Also, some parents might work all day and a good meal is hard for some of these children to get. This just helps to keep them from going hungry.”

Even though the program is meant to help those in need, no one is turned away, Bell said.

“It’s an open site meal, we cannot turn anybody away,” she said. “Any kid can walk up to any site and receive their meal.”

The locations that will be open throughout the summer include:

The Logan County Public Library - lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

KP Hall - lunch is served Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m.

Russellville Housing Authority - lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hampton Park - lunch is served Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:15 to 2 p.m.

Guiding Light - breakfast is served Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is served Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Two churches, Mt. Zion and the Jesus Church of Russellville, will also be feeding stations for supper during their vacation Bible schools next month.
