Last week, Lewisburg Elementary participated in the Kentucky Student Mock Election.

The seventh and eighth grade social studies students acted as poll workers as all the school’s students voted for President of the United States.

Students in grades 5-8 also voted for several other issues as well as for president.

“It went really well,” social studies teacher Bobbi Miller said. “The kids did a great job coming in and voting.”

As part of the exercise, some of the seventh and eighth grade students took exit polls as students left the classroom where voting was conducted.

The students then used those exit polls to calculate the projected winner for the school.

“I went ahead and figured out on my own who won through the exit polling,” Miller said. “I found it very interesting that only about half the class would answer in the exit polls.”

The unofficial result was the Mitt Romney won fairly easily at the school.

“We’ll see how accurate that is when the results are posted,” Miller said. “I don’t think I was surprised with it, but I don’t think I would have been surprised if it had gone the other way either.”

Official results will be posted on the Kentucky Secretary of State webpage - www.sos.ky.gov.

As of Monday morning, the results were still being uploaded and Lewisburg was not yet among those tallied.

“This was a very good activity that I will definitely do again in the future,” Miller said. “I think it really opened the eyes of the students, and will help make them even more responsible citizens in the future with looking at the issues.”
