Logan County’s Recycling Center was once again a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Fiscal Court meeting. At a previous meeting, Magistrate Dickie Carter had expressed concern about how much it was costing the tax payers to offer recycling and how much more it will cost them to continue to take out of county recyclables now that the market was low.
Carter was concerned about the idea of purchasing a new building, which was mentioned at a previous meeting, to house Simpson County’s recyclables. According to jailer Bill Jenkins, who is over the program, Simpson County brings its recycled material in a transfer truck and dumps the material on the ground which results in it blowing all over and making a very large mess.
It was discussed at a previous meeting about purchasing either a building or a concrete pit with three sides to hold the material. Carter said he doesn’t like the idea of the county footing the bill for a building for someone else’s mess, especially since the market is down for recyclables and the county is loosing money not making it on the program.
Magistrate Harold Prince said when the program began he was a little leery about it as well but quickly found out that people wanted it.
Carter said he wasn’t for stopping the recycling program but wanted the county to come up with some ideas on how to generate or save money. He said he didn’t understand spending $118,000 just to make $32,000. One of his suggestions was to look into the county transporting its own recyclables to Nashville instead of selling them to Bluegrass Recycling in Russellville who turns around and sells it for more themselves.
Jenkins did say that the state came and inspected the center and were very complimentary saying they were impressed with how Logan County was handling the amount of material they took in.
• The court unanimously approved to pay off $19,000 they still owed on a KIA loan that was given in 2000 for ten years to purchase equipment and trailers for recycling.
