Stevenson Elementary School principal Tammy Corum will be retiring at the end of this school year after spending five years as the school’s top administrator.

She was hired as the school’s new principal in June, 2008 and has seen several positive changes at the school under her watch.

“Ms. Corum has been in the Russellville school system her entire career and has done an admirable job in her work as Stevenson principal,” Smith said. “She’ll be missed as an educator and and administrator. She has done a lot of good work to move Stevenson forward in the time she has been there.”

Corum began her career in education in the classroom where she served as a first grade teacher at Stevenson Elementary for several years. Throughout her career, she has also served as an academic team coach and a curriculum specialist with the department of education.

Corum attended high school in Louisville. She earned her under graduate and graduate degrees at Western Kentucky University and later went back to received her Rank 1 and an administration and leadership certification.

“We know that when the time comes, she’ll have some other opportunities in education,” Smith said. “And doing that with a retired life makes it a lot easier.”

Smith and the Stevenson Elementary site-based decision making council now have plenty of time to use in finding Corum’s replacement.

“I do respect with her letting us know her intentions early,” Smith said. “This gives us an opportunity to find a new replacement as soon as possible, even though the contract will not begin until July. But in order to find good, viable candidates, we need to start the process early.”
