Junior Damian Elam runs into the end zone for one of his two touchdowns.
Turnovers proved to be Russellville’s undoing on Friday night at Rhea Stadium in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A football playoffs.
The Panthers lost 21-14 to Paducah Tilghman after a costly interception and fumble in the second half.
RHS led 14-7 at halftime and got the ball to begin the third quarter. The Panthers went on an impressive 14-play drive deep into Paducah Tilghman territory.
Russellville picked up four first downs on the series, but the final play ended with junior quarterback D.J. Quarles throwing an interception after being flushed out of the pocket.
“I should have never called the pass play,” RHS coach John Myers said. “What we called was wide-open, but D.J. just didn’t have time to get the ball to the receiver. Then he scrambled around and just tried to make something happen.”
After the turnover, the Blue Tornado went 85 yards down the field for the score. The drive ended on a big 33-yard pass play which tied the score at 14-14.
After the score, both teams exchanged punts before a second turnover completely changed the momentum of the game.
On a third-down play, junior running back Damian “Dayday” Elam fumbled the ball.
It was then picked up and returned 55 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
The extra point made the score 21-14 with 4:03 left in the game.
The Panthers failed to get anything going on the subsequent drive, going three-and-out before punting the ball away.
After the punt went just eight net yards, the RHS defense was unable to get the ball back and Russellville saw its season come to an end.
“It’s hard losing like that,” Myers said. “But I couldn’t be more proud of those kids.”
The senior class, which played its last game, won 35 games – including six in the playoffs – over the past four years. They also went undefeated in the regular season in Class 3A, District 2 in each of the past three years.
“You get close to a bunch like that,” Myers said. “They’re not overly talented, but they have made their name on hard-work and effort. They have huge hearts and they played them.
“Those kind of guys are the ones that really hurt when you lose like we did. My heart really goes out to them.”
Russellville had a very successful first half against Paducah Tilghman.
The Panthers scored first after Elam forced a fumble and Darrin Murphy recovered it on the Paducah 7-yard line.
On the very next play, Elam scored the touchdown, but the extra point was blocked.
The RHS defense then forced a punt and the offense drove 57 yards for another score.
Quarles pitched the ball to Elam on a great option read after holding the ball until the very last moment. Elam then went 23 yards for the touchdown. Quarles connected with Dudley Bouldin for a two-point conversion to make the score 14-0 with 10:47 left in the second quarter.
The two team traded punts before the Blue Tornado scored on their biggest play of the night – a 59-yard touchdown pass.
“Paducah Tilghman is just so explosive offensively,” Myers said. “It’s hard to keep them from getting one big play for a touchdown and they got two.”
The extra point was good and the score remained 14-7 for the remainder of the half.
“Our kids played their hearts out,” Myers said. “We had a great gameplan and executed it as well as we could.”
Russellville ends the season at 8-5 after winning eight of its last 10 games.
The Panthers played a brutal early season schedule that resulted in an 0-3 start and several injuries.
But once the team healed and licked its wounds, it was better for it.
“Without a doubt our schedule and injuries were blessings in disguise,” Myers said. “The injuries forced us to move some guys around and all of those things results in us being a better football team than we would have been. I’d like to make our schedule even tougher next year, but we’re in the second year of a two-year contract.
“It was a great year. This was an outstanding football team that made outstanding strides over the year.”
