I have followed the progress of the Logan County Little League All-Stars with excitement.
I love youth sports, though frankly, my own youth sports career was lackluster. In three years of baseball, I hit the ball three times. I almost tackled someone in football once, and I might have made a basket when playing for my church's team.
I've seen the ugly side of youth sports – I remember as a basketball referee having to empty the gym of all parents and other observers to finish a game. The kids were 6- and 7-years-old, it was a league that did not keep score (that was lost on the parents I think), and I suspect the biggest thing the kids remember is the free Coke after the game.
When something like that happens, it is hard to see the value of youth sports.
But then you have a run like the Logan County All-Stars.
Let us not forget that this is a season those young men will remember for the rest of their lives, regardless of how far they go in baseball. To say you played in the Little League World Series - well, that is a rare accomplishment few can boast.
But there is something more.
As I read the News-Democrat & Leader, the comments online, in blogs, on Facebook, etc., I saw a town united.
With everything that goes on – whether it is wrangling over the appropriateness of a bid down in Adairville, superintendents leaving, former magistrates being charged with stalking, and more, it is wonderful to see a team of young people pull out all the stops and succeed.
And in doing so, they bring the community together with an accomplishment that makes us all proud.
And that is something. Whether it is a youth baseball team, the high school football team, or other youth sports group - when they make a run on the state title, the World Series, or whatever their penultimate event is called, the community comes together to aid them.
The proof is in the pudding. This community raised over $65,000 for those kids. And that is impressive.
It was a great run. The community should be proud of its support and proud of the young men for their accomplishments.
And to the players and coaches. Great job! Everyone delights in your achievement.
