Panthers lose close one to BGHS

The Russellville High School boys’ basketball team proved that it is a serious contender for the Fourth Region title this week.

The Panthers hosted Bowling Green – which came into the game with just three losses – and fought the Purples before losing 93-90 in double overtime.

Junior guard Damian Elam led Russellville with 22 points and three other Panthers also scored in double figures. Kevin Temple had 18 while Justin Bollenbacker and Davonta Bryant each added 16.

The Russellville girls were beaten 96-60 by Bowling Green on Tuesday. BGHS is the top-ranked team in the Fourth Region.

Nakia Daniel had 26 points for the Lady Panthers while Tameeka Rippy and Amber Sydnor added 11 apiece.

Logan County’s games on Tuesday were canceled because of the snow.

The drawing for the District 13 basketball tournament was held this week and Russellville will be taking on Logan County in the first round. Logan County is also the site for this year's tournament.

RHS tied with Franklin-Simpson for the regular season district title with identical 5-1 records. Franklin-Simpson won the tiebreaker and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Russellville will be the No. 2 seed.

Logan County and Todd Central tied for the No. 3 seed and LCHS won that tiebreaker to take on Russellville.

The postseason "Clash of the Cats" is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at LCHS. Franklin-Simpson will take on Todd Central in the other first round game on Monday at the same time.

The championship will be played Thursday at 7 p.m.

The pairings for the girls district tournament were already set.

Top-seeded Franklin-Simpson will be taking on Russellville on Monday at 6:30 p.m. No. 2 seeded Logan County will host Todd Central on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The championship game will be Friday at 7 p.m.
