The Logan County High School football team hung right with undefeated Allen County-Scottsville in the first quarter, but wasn’t able to pull out a road victory on Friday night.

On an extremely muddy field, the two teams lit the scoreboard four times in the first period and were tied 14-14 before the Patriots pulled away for a 40-20 win.

Allen County struck first, getting a 27-yard touchdown from junior Brandon Boards. But Logan County came right back as Thomas Washington ran the ensuing kickoff back for a Logan County touchdown.

The kick failed, though, and Logan still trailed 7-6.

Allen County-Scottsville then got another long rushing touchdown – this time a 38-yarder from quarterback Cory Cooper – to go up 14-6.

Logan County responded when its quarterback, junior John Logan Dockins, connected with sophomore receiver Twin Lancaster for a 35-yard scoring strike.

The Cougars converted the two-point attempt and tied the score at 14-14.

But the Patriots then scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second period and then two more after halftime to go up 40-14. Cooper threw for two touchdowns, Boards ran in another and the Patriots ran an interception back for their final score of the game.

Logan County got one more touchdown late in the third quarter as Dockins found Washington for a 20-yard score that made the final 40-20 in favor of Allen County-Scottsville.

The loss was the first of the year in Class 4A, District 2 for LCHS. The Cougars overall record now stands at 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the district.

Logan County still has a shot at claiming the No. 2 seed in the district and hosting a playoff game for the first time in school history.

Logan County plays Franklin-Simpson on Friday in the Cougars’ final regular season home game. With a win over the Wildcats, LCHS would finish second in the district and get to host a playoff game on Nov. 6. With a loss this week, the Cougars will likely finish third in the district and play on the road in the first round of the playoffs.
