The Russellville/Logan County Concerned Citizens tutoring program got some much-needed help this week when BB&T bank donated a copy machine to the local non-profit organization.
The donation was through the bank’s annual Lighthouse Project, which picks one worthy local organization each year and offers it assistance.
BB&T picked the Concerned Citizens this year after seeing a News-Democrat & Leader article about how the program was in need.
“We saw that they needed basic things like pencils and pens and paper and decided that would be the Lighthouse Project for this year,” said Sandra Kinser, the financial center leader for the local BB&T branch. “But when we contacted them, we discovered that they had greater needs than just that.”
The tutoring program had no copier and had to use its fax machine to make copies for its students to do their afterschool work.
So, BB&T stepped up and purchased a brand new copier for the tutoring program.
“I don’t know how we would have done it without them,” Concerned Citizens director Doris Vick said. “We didn’t have any money for anything like this.”
But the Lighthouse Project is about more than just handing out needed supplies.
Bank employees have the opportunity to take four normal work hours and volunteer at Concerned Citizens.
“Some have already been down here and helped with cleaning up and handing out the meals with the feeding program,” Kinser said. “We’re here to just do whatever Doris needs help with.”
Vick said she was very thankful for the help from the bank.
“If more people would be more like BB&T, this would be a beautiful place,” Vick said.
Past Lighthouse Projects have included helping with a summer reading program at the Logan County Library, buying a curriculum for Lifeskills and working with Community Action.
