2012 marks the 36th year that the 7th Battalion has worked together with Logan County to help its citizens during times of need. From assistance during floods, snow and ice storms, to emergency medical transportation and working with Toys For Tots, the 7th Battalion has been a great asset to our county.

Ten years ago, Patricia Hedges asked the 7th Battalion what we could do to help them in their time of need. The response was unanimous - help our families while we are in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a result, Soldier Family Christmas was organized by the Logan County Democratic Women to help the families of the lowest paid soldiers of the 7th.

Each year, the need has grown. Last year, 164 children received gifts, 33 teens received Wal-Mart gift cards and 60 families received food boxes. In addition, gift cards were given to young soldiers to help hem fo home for the holidays and for supplies for returning soldiers from Afghanistan. This was all made possible through the generosity of local service organizations, individual contributions, the local Democrat and Republican parties, our elected officials, the retired teachers organization and all the individuals who purchased raffle tickets for a signed UK basketball.

This year, there are 274 children from ages 1-10 that will each need a gift, 53 children from ages 10-15 who will need gift cards from Wal-Mart and 60 families who will need food boxes. Extra gift cards will be given to young soldiers to help them go home at Christmas. At this time, money is needed to purchase gift cards and food. Food can also be donated - canned corn, green beans, fruit and cranberry sauce; peanut butter, Stove Top stuffing, boxed macaroni and cheese, cookies and crackers. All contributions need to be in by December 11. Gifts and food boxes will be packed at Fellowship Church of Christ, 104 S. Franklin Street on December 12 at 10 a.m.

Funds are also being raised through the sale of raffle tickets ($3 each or two for $5) for a UK championship basketball signed by John Calipari. The tickets will be on sale December 6 at the Joe Carrico Toys for Tots country ham breakfast at the UK Extension building. Please come out and honor Bro. Joe Carrico by making this the biggest and best breakfast and raffle ever. The need is great both in our community and at Fort Campbell.

Robert Hedges law office, 157 W. 5th Street.

A challenge is being sent out to the citizens of Logan County to help those who are always ready to help us. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help. Military retirees, a special challenge is being extended to you to pitch in and help. Toys for Tots and Soldier Family Christmas were both so special to Bro. Joe. Don’t let him down - honor his memory by donating to both programs he so dearly loved.
