Producers who have land under contract through the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) are responsible to control undesirable species, such as thistles.

The 2008 drought was one of the most serious droughts that Kentucky has experienced in recent history. These conditions proved to be difficult on newly planted fields allowing undesirable species such as thistles to invade some of the native grasses and wildflowers plantings.

If thistles or other undesirable plant species are a concern on your CREP acres, immediately contact your local USDA office to schedule a site visit to determine necessary control options. Failure to control undesirable species may result in the assessment of penalties including contract termination.
