Bucksville, located in northeast Logan County on Hwy. 1038 will be featured on Hometown History Day, Oct. 3 – the opening day of the 2009 Tobacco & Heritage Festival.
The public is invited to assemble at the Gasper River Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. to view exhibits and to hear the history of the community. Residents of the Bucksville area are encouraged to be at the event to “host” the visitors and to share their stories and experiences. Like many other rural communities, this was once a bustling place with stores, schools and businesses.
Glenn Tinsley, who grew up in Bucksville, will describe how life used to be. Thelma Grayson, Leo Duncan and others will be on the program. A tour of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and the Masonic Hall will follow.
Why was Gasper renamed Bucksville? When was the nearby covered bridge replaced? Where was the Seminary located? Come and find out. Pictures and pieces of history will be on display.
A visit to the Rock House on Hwy. 103 near Chandlers will conclude the day. Built in 1814, the house gave its name to Rock Spring that rises nearby and flows to Bucksville and eventually into Gasper River.
