Fireworks might be legally sold soon inside the city of Adairville.

At Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, the city council discussed a request by store owner Sunny Punjabi to seasonally sell fireworks.

Last year the state of Kentucky changed its laws that banned the sale of fireworks, but individual cities and counties have to adopt the state regulations before they can be sold.

Councilman Bill Steen made a motion to accept the state guidelines and the council passed it 6-0, but city clerk Sharon Head said the council wants city attorney James Milam to look into the matter before telling merchants they can start applying for permits to sell fireworks.

“I’m not sure if we can get it done in time for them to be sold this season,” Head said. “But we’re hoping to have it done in time to have it legal for people to shoot them.”

It has been technically illegal to shoot off fireworks in the city in the past, but that law was never enforced.

Also at the council meeting, mayor Jim Wilkerson said that there is a $1,000 reward being offered through Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons guilty of setting fire to the old Odom’s sausage plant.

The plant was set on fire during the late night hours of May 14 and the arson is being investigated by the Logan County sheriff’s department and the state fire marshal’s office.

Wilkerson also discussed the need to build an addition to the fire hall. He said it is needed in order to house the new taker truck the Adairville rural department recently purchased. The tanker has been kept at the Adairville feed mill since there is not enough room in the current fire hall.

Also, the council unanimously passed the budget ordinance for the upcoming fiscal year.
