The Logan County 4-H/FFA Steer Show was held July 14, 2009 with a full day of events and activities. Events included a beef breeding show, a rabbit show, showmanship contest, and the steer show and sale.

There were 14 head of heifers and bulls that competed in the Beef Breeding Show with Samuel Brown exhibiting the champion female and Caroline Milam showing the reserve champion. Austin Cole exhibited the champion bull and Caroline Milam had reserve champion bull. Judge Ken Culp sorted the cattle for the Beef Breeding and Steer Shows.

Winning the supreme showmanship honors was Samuel Brown from Warren County who was the winner of the open senior division and Monica Nolan was the winner of the open junior division. The winners of the closed division were Ian Woodall in the junior division and Molly Clark in the senior division with Ian Woodall taking the supreme showman honors. Showmanship is sponsored annually by Mrs. J. C. Luckett, Auburn Leather Co, Sleepy Valley Limousin and Milam Cattle Co.

Each year Maxine Hinton, with Hinton Hardwoods, sponsors a rate-of-gain contest for the steer that has the highest weight per day on feed. This year’s recipient was Robyn Estes with her steer that gained 3.29 pounds per day.

This year we had 46 steers exhibited in the steer show. The steer weights ranged from 1,025 pounds to 1480 pounds and they were broken into 8 weight classes. This year’s grand champion steer went to Andrew Milam with his 1,245-pound steer and reserve champion went to B.J. Stinson with her 1,375-pound steer.

The 2009 Steer Show was a great success and was greatly supported by individuals, businesses and industry. There were approximately 200 people at the auction sale for a fun time of fellowship and bidding for all of our young people. This year’s sale averaged approximately $1.60. Thanks to all of the volunteers, parents, and supporters who made this event a huge success.
