A Jerseyville man was charged in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of retail theft over $300, Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz said.

The man is identified as Brian A. Schaake, 31, of the 400 block of East Spruce Street, Jerseyville.

On Thursday at 1:52 p.m., deputies responded to Walmart, 6660 Godfrey Road, Godfrey, in reference to a retail theft. A Walmart loss prevention officer told the responding deputy that a man pushed a shopping cart, containing about $324 of merchandise, out of the store without paying for it. The loss prevention officer confronted the subject as he was exiting the building. Upon being confronted, the man abandoned the stolen merchandise and fled toward Airport Road.

Deputies found the suspect hiding under a vehicle at a business on Airport Road. He was arrested and identified as Brian A. Schaake. Schaake was transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The warrant and criminal information was issued by Judge Keith Jensen, who set bond at $30,000.
