Adairville and Logan County’s acclaimed artist, Peggy S. Brewer, has returned home for the summer and will be having a much anticipated showing at this weekend’s Strawberry Festival. Mrs. Brewer, sometimes referred to as Kentucky’s answer to Grandma Moses will soon be celebrating her 92nd birthday. Her primitive, bright colors and very stylish paintings have caught the eye of art lovers all over the country. Her paintings of the Logan County countryside and her lively and colorful clown paintings have become extremely popular.
Mrs. Brewer is a native of Adairville and her husband Ralph spend each summer in the home her great grandfather, Matt Barbee, built in 1893. They spend their winters in Largo, Florida. Peggy and Ralph were married in 1946, nearly 68 years ago.
Peggy Brewer developed an interest in drawing back during her high school days at the old Adairville High School. She still has a book of her earliest high school drawings that date back more than 70 years. That book will be on display at her art showing in the Adairville Chamber of Commerce Building, on the east side of the square, during the Strawberry Festival.
Mrs. Brewer began painting a good many years ago when she and her husband were living in Phoenix, Arizona. She generally does not sketch her painting before she paints. She just paints what she sees in her mind. She says this, ”appeals to her eclectic mind.” She claims painting keeps her out of trouble.
Peggy and Ralph are the parents of what she calls four wonderful children, grandparents of seven sweet and wonderful young people and great grandparents to three more exceptional children. Possibly, among that group will be another “Grandma Brewer” who will carry on the painting tradition.
You can see Mrs. Brewer’s painting on display at the Adairville Chamber of Commerce & Historical Society Museum this Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the annual Strawberry Festival. Try to stop by and meet Peggy Brewer, the artist, and her family and see many beautiful paintings. There is no admission fee.
