The snow and ice this week has added to the growing number of makeup days the local school systems will have to implement.

Both the Logan County and Russellville Independent school districts missed Monday through Friday this week after the worst storm of the season dropped several inches of snow and ice on Sunday night and Monday morning.

Those snow days bring the number up to 15 for Logan County.

“That’s more snow days than we’ve had in several years,” said Logan County superintendent Marshall Kemp. “But we’ve had much more winter this year than we’ve had in years too.”

No decisions have been made yet, but Kemp said he expects make-up days to be a big topic of conversation at next week’s regular school board meeting.

“I still have to hear from some of our administrators to hear what their suggestions are,” Kemp said. “I am sure some will say that we should do away with some or all of our spring break and some will say, ‘oh no’ we can’t interfere with that.”

At press time, Kemp was unsure about whether Logan County would be able to return to school on Friday.

The situation for Russellville Independent is somewhat better.

Students were already scheduled to be off on Friday as teachers had a professional development day training already slated on the school calendar.

Russellville superintendent Leon Smith explained that an out-of-state presenter had been contracted to come and speak with the high school and middle school teachers on March 7 for over a year and that there was no way to use that as a makeup day.

“We’ve only missed nine days so far this year, which is much better than most other school districts around the state,” Smith said.

Both Smith and Kemp said they are hopeful that the state legislature will pass a bill that allows school districts some relief when it comes to makeup days.

“Our next school board meeting isn’t until March 18, so I am hopeful we’ll have a pretty good idea about what the state will allow us to do before then,” Smith said.
