R’ville softball team wins state competition

The Russellville Special Olympics coed-softball team competed and took home the gold during the state softball competition held in Bowling Green. The competition was held at the Mike Buchanan Park with teams as far away as Frankfort and Louisville represented.
The “Russellville Rampage” competed and won the regional in Paducah in August to advance to the state level, which proved to be a very competitive and exciting win.
The team literally came from behind during the state competition, having lost their first game on Friday night, however, what the other teams weren’t aware of, but found out quickly, was that the Rampage is a daytime team. The players came from the losers bracket to beat both winning teams in the winners bracket to take the trophy.
“This win was a sweet one,” said coach Jenn Siebold. “We were in the loser’s bracket, but we came back to beat the winning teams. That is a great feeling. I am very proud of the players, who not only showed their talent for the game, but their strength in not giving up when they were down. They are a great bunch.”
This is only the third year for the Rampage and already they have two regional wins, and one state championship under their belt.
What makes this win even more important to the team is the terrible accident that occurred involving a coach and some players coming back from the regional competition in Paducah. The accident caused a coach and players to be taken to the hospital for serious injury, one by helicopter.
“I wasn’t sure we would even be able to go to the state tournament after the accident,” said Siebold. “We were all so worried.”
Fortunately, all those involved in the accident made full recoveries, and although one player could not make it to the state competition, the rest of the team was sure to bring home the win to share it with them.
