Sam Northern, the 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher at Lewisburg School and a graduate of Russellville High School, was selected to participate in the 2014 Fulbright-Hays Summer Seminars Abroad: History and Culture in China.
The selection process for this program is conducted by the International and Foreign Language Education office of the United States Department of Education. This annual program is sponsored by the National Committee of U.S.-China Relations.
This year’s group consisted of 16 K-12 educators from across the country. The trip began with a pre-departure orientation in San Francisco, Calif. on June 30, with departure for China on July 3. The program included a mix of some of the most modern, historic, and culturally significant cities in China, including Beijing, Xi’an, Chongqing, and Shanghai (in this order and ending on July 30).
The host institution in China was the Ministry of Education. The organization that planned and implemented the activities in each city was the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE).
As a condition of this award, Mr. Northern will develop a curriculum project that focuses on aspects of Chinese history and culture. The curriculum project will be posted to the Department of Education’s and the National Committee’s websites.
