ALTUS - About an inch of dry snow fell over the Altus area early this morning. Light flurries continued throughout the morning. A wind chill advisory was issued through noon today, with a winter weather advisory remaining in effect through the afternoon. The snow was expected to taper off west to east by the end of the day.

Total snowfall amounts were predicted to range from 2 to 3 inches across portions of western Oklahoma, with 1 to 2 inches predicted across western North Texas and central and southern Oklahoma.

Travel was expected to be slick and hazardous, at least through the afternoon hours, and could continue overnight. In addition, blowing snow could cause visibility to drop to near 1 mile at times making driving even more difficult.

Wind chill values will remain in the 0 to -15 range into the afternoon, with single digit wind chills expected this afternoon.

Emergency management officials sent out an advisory through the City of Altus’ blackboard system yesterday urging people to be careful if you have to travel, because even small amounts of snow can make roads and sidewalks slick and dangerous. They also urge people to dress in layers and leave no skin exposed to the wind. Frostbite and hypothermia can happen quickly. Check on the elderly and sick in your neighborhood to ensure they are staying warm.

Lows tonight will remain in the teens, with a possibility of snow and rain mix on Friday. There is no snow in the forecast after Friday, at least through next week.
