Panthers close out district campaign with win

The Russellville basketball teams played their last district games of the regular season on Friday as they invited the Todd County Central teams to their court. The Lady Panthers played a close first half of the game, but the Lady Rebels would take off in the second half and win 52-35. The Panthers and Rebels battled throughout the entire game, but the Panthers would come out with their third win over the Rebels this year with a score of 88-77.
The Lady Panthers would begin the game trailing close behind the Lady Rebels. The Lady Panthers would end the first quarter only down 11-14. The two teams would continue to fight in the second quarter and the Lady Panthers would take the lead with four minutes left. But their lead would be taken away quickly and the Lady Rebels would turn the game around fast. The Lady Panthers would end the second quarter down 18-27.
The Lady Rebels took off in the third quarter, scoring 17 points and hold the Lady Panthers to only 10 points. The Lady Rebels would hold a 44-28 lead over the Lady Panthers as they went into the fourth quarter. The Lady Rebels defense would be able to hold the Lady Panthers as they finished the game with a win of 52-35 over the Lady Panthers.
Senior Khalia Hampton would lead the Lady Panthers with 17 points. She was followed by Loreal Chaney with seven and senior Devonna Sydnor with six.
The Panthers would face the Rebels next. This would be the third time these two teams would meet for the season and each game had been close, and this one was not much different.
The Panthers and the Rebels would play a close first half of the game. The two teams would battle hard in the first quarter, but the Rebels would take the small lead of 21-20 at the end of the first. The Panthers would work hard and get a small lead of 29-24 with five minutes left in the second quarter, but the Rebels would come back and end the half with another one point lead of 39-38.
The Panthers would pick up their game in the third quarter and start playing smart offensively. The Panthers would come out strong and keep the lead in the third quarter. They would lead by 62-54 as they went into the final quarter. The Panthers would take off in the fourth quarter, scoring 26 points over the Rebels. They would win 88-77.
Senior Barrett Croslin would lead the Panthers with 28 points. Lee McMurry would follow with 22 and senior Christian Naylor would finish with 17.
The Russellville teams will be playing at home tonight as compete against Bowling Green High School. The Lady Panthers and the Lady Purples will begin the night at 6:00. Tonight will be a special night to recognize the seniors. This ceremony will be held in between the girls and boys games.
