Lady Cougars headed to region championship

The Logan County Lady Cougars have now made their way to the Fourth Region Tournament championship game after their wins over the Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots and the Bowling Green Lady Purples. The Lady Cougars breezed through the quarter final game against the Lady Partiots with a 3-0 win. The Lady Purples put up a good fight but the Lady Cougars would make a comeback to win three straight matches to defeat the Lady Purples 3-2.
The Lady Cougars started the first night of the regional tournament on Monday strong as they faced the Lady Patriots. The Lady Cougars would take the lead early in the first two matches and win the first match 25-9 and the second match 25-13.
The Lady Cougars would struggle in the third game and the Lady Patriots would tie the game 5-5. But they would pull out a lead and defeat the Lady Patriots 25-14. The Lady Cougars would advance on to the semifinal game against the Bowling Green Lady Purples.
Chanler Steenbergen would lead the Lady Cougars in kills with 13. Brianna Wooden and Madison Abbot would follow with five each. Kapreshia Powell would finish with four. Rachyl Miller would lead the Lady Cougars with four aces. Amber Carroll would follow with three. Katelyn Jones would have four solo blocks during this game. Miller would lead the Lady Cougars with 14 digs. Miller was followed by Victoria Cates with 10 and Abbot with nine.
On Wednesday, the Lady Cougars faced the Bowling Green Lady Purples in the semifinal game of the regional tournament. The two teams would battle during the first match and keep the game tied up to 16-16. The Lady Cougars would start to pull away and get up to a lead of 24-21. But they would make some mistakes and would fall 25-27 to the Lady Purples. The Lady Purples would start with a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Purples would start the second match strong and would lead until the Lady Cougars would tie the game 16-16. The Lady Cougars would then start to take the lead. But the Lady Cougars would get stuck on the 23rd point and the Lady Purples would come back to win the second match 23-25. The Lady Purples would lead 2-0.
The third match would go by fairly quickly. The Lady Cougars knew they had to turn it up and they did. The Lady Cougars took the lead early in the game and never let the Lady Purples catch up. The Lady Cougars would win the third match 25-19, putting them back in the game. They would trail behind the Lady Purples 1-2.
The Lady Purples would take control of the fourth match of the night, with an early lead of 6-2. But the Lady Cougars would fight back to tie the game 6-6. The Lady Purples would fight harder and would lead the Lady Cougars 17-12. The Lady Cougars were not ready to give up yet, as they came back to tie the game 18-18. The Lady Cougars would then take the lead and win the match 25-21. The teams would then be tied 2-2, and they would go into the fifth game to break the tie.
The Lady Purples would play smart and take the lead early, but the Lady Cougars picked up their game and would fly past the Lady Purples, leading 10-4. They Lady Purples would try to comeback and would be within three points of the Lady Cougars, but the Lady Cougars would end the tie-breaker with a 15-11 win, advancing to the region 4 championship game.
Steenbergen would lead the Lady Cougars with 18 kills. Wooden would follow with 11 and Jones would finish with nine. Jones finished the night with 12 blocks. Wooden ended the night with nine and Steenbergen had seven. Abbot led the Lady Cougars in digs with 26. Miller followed with 16 and Cates finished with 15.
“I reminded the girls that they could win three in a row like Bowling Green did earlier in the season. I told them to step up and play big and they did. They played big tonight,” said head coach Steven Lyne. “We are all drained but they gave everything they could to win. Now we are going to get some rest and be ready to play. I tell them to play with heart and as long as they do that they can do some great things.”
