Just a few weeks after being named the new head girls’ basketball coach at Russellville High School, Calvin Head was announced on Friday as the school’s next athletic director.
He takes over for Nathan Thompson, who stepped down on Monday after spending the past couple of years leading the schools sports department.
“Nathan has laid a very good framework here, and I have big shoes to fill,” Head said. “The job at hand is pretty big, but I am excited about being able to assist all the athletic programs at Russellville High School and get them in a position where they are competitive and successful year in and year out.”
Head said that one of his main priorities is improving the girls sports at the school.
“That’s a big one I want to tackle,” he said. “We need to increase our girls participation and get the girls teams even more competitive.”
Some of the more immediate jobs include finding a new head baseball coach and a middle school girls basketball coach. Head said he would also like to see the school start a middle school softball team.
Head brings strong experience with both men’s and women’s teams at the high school level. Head was formerly the head boys’ basketball coach at Todd County Central High School, where he also served as the head softball coach. He spent four years as the boys’ basketball coach and five years as the softball coach while at Todd County Central High School.
Before coaching, Head played basketball at Todd County Central High School and later at the college level. After injuries ended his playing career his freshman year at Lindsey Wilson College, Calvin went on to become a student manager and coach for the team where he gained valuable coaching experience from 2006-2008.
