Two people are dead after an ex-boyfriend chased down the mother of his children in an apartment complex off of 9th Street in Russellville on Wednesday afternoon, shooting her and then himself.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., 911 dispatch received several calls of a black male wielding a gun while chasing a white female at Logan Heights apartments. When officers arrived it was too late for 34-year-old Melissa Green, who was lifeless on the ground where 48-year-old Kenneth Temple had shot her in the head.

According to Detective Kenneth Edmonds, of the Russellville Police Department, Temple was still alive when he arrived on scene.

“I asked him to put down his weapon,” said Edmonds, who added that he gave the command twice before Temple turned the gun on himself. “It was a bad situation.”

According to Edmonds, Temple and Green had been in a relationship years ago, but to his knowledge they were not at the time of the incident. The couple was never married, but shared two children together, who were in a nearby apartment at the time of the killing. Green had moved back to Russellville from Henderson in December of last year.

“From what I have gotten from eye witnesses, Temple came to the apartments that afternoon and got into Green’s vehicle to talk to her boyfriend Landus Nourse, who had just returned from work,” said Edmonds. “According to Nourse, there was no altercation with him. The conversation was calm.”

Edmonds said when Green came out of the apartment complex, Temple got out of the vehicle and began chasing her until he knocked her down. She then got up and ran towards the laundry area of the apartment as Temple followed her with gun drawn.

“According to Nourse, he could not help her so he called 911. He said he heard a shot, but when he returned to where he had seen Green she was no longer there,” Edmonds said.

Logan County Coroner Mary Givens was dispatched to the scene. She said when she arrived both Green and Temple were deceased. The bodies were taken to Madisonville for an autopsy.

At this point, Edmonds is still investigating the incident and interviewing eye witnesses to the shooting.
